Under the International Religious Freedom Act, the Ambassador-at-Large also serves as a ex-officio member of our Commission, and we look forward to getting to know Suzan Johnson Cook as the confirmation process proceeds in the Senate.”

WASHINGTON, D.C.–During the U.S. Commission on International Freedom's (USCIRF) Washington, DC press conference yesterday on Iran, expert panelists disclosed information alleging that three revolutionary court judges in Iran are responsible for the vast majority of unfair and harsh sentences handed down to political prisoners and other "security" detainees. Such prisoners include innocent journalists, human rights activists, ethnic and religious minorities, peaceful protesters, and others.

WASHINGTON, DC – Prior to the United Nation’s “Alliance of Civilizations” gathering in Istanbul, Turkey April 6-7, the United States Commission on International Freedom (USCIRF) sent a letter to President Barak Obama urging him to raise the issue of religious freedom at the forum. The letter also asked that President Obama ensure that the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartolomew, the spiritual leader of almost 300 million Orthodox Christians, be welcomed as a participant.

WASHINGTON - Concerned by the current political crisis threatening elections in Sudan scheduled for April 11-13, today the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) urged the U.S. government and international community to work with key Sudanese stakeholders to bring the elections to a timely and peaceful conclusion.  Robust implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), culminating in the Southern Sudan referendum mandated to take place on January 9, 2011, must be ensured by all parties.

WASHINGTON D.C. - The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) today welcomed the declining support in the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) for a resolution urging countries to outlaw the so-called “defamation of religions.”  Though disappointed that the HRC once again passed this ill-conceived resolution, USCIRF applauds the fact that support for this concept has hit a new low.
