December 26, 2011 | by USCIRF

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) today expressed grave concern over the latest outbreak of sectarian religious violence on Christmas Day in Nigeria and renewed its call for the Nigerian government to investigate, prosecute, and punish such crimes and those responsible for them.  According to news reports and statements from the Government of Nigeria, the recent violence included Christmas Day explosions at Christian churches in five cities in central and northeastern Nigeria-- Jos, Kano, Madalla, Gadaka, and Damaturu--leaving at least 39 dead and 65 wounded. Muslim militants from the extremist organization Boko Haram have claimed responsibility for the bombings, making this the second Christmas season in a row that Boko Haram has attacked Christian houses of worship in Nigeria.

For Immediate Release
December 14, 2011| by USCIRF

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A report documenting Sudanese government violations of international human rights and humanitarian law in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile states was released today by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom.

The report is based on eyewitness accounts and interviews conducted by USCIRF staff in the Yida refugee camp October, 17 - 24, 2011.  The Commission released the report at a press conference also attended by Representatives Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Frank Wolf (R-VA).

“The government of President Omar al-Bashir is killing people in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile states based on religion and ethnicity, and is denying them access to vital international, unrestricted humanitarian assistance – as Bashir did during the North-South civil war and the Darfur genocide,” said  Leonard Leo, USCIRF chair. “The world must wake up and put a stop to the atrocities the Sudanese government is committing against its own people.”

November 16, 2011 | by USCIRF

Washington, D.C. - The self-immolations of Tibetan monks and nuns are the direct result of China’s harsh suppression of Tibetan culture and religion, said the US Commission on International Religious Freedom yesterday. The U.S. bipartisan federal agency urged the Obama administration to further challenge China to review counterproductive policies toward Tibetan Buddhism and to embrace concrete negotiations with appointed representatives of the Dalai Lama.  The Administration previously had raised Tibetan issues with China at last week’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in Hawaii.

11/9/2011: Pakistan’s Educational System Fuels Religious Discrimination PDF Print

November 9, 2011 | by USCIRF

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A new study sponsored by the U.S. Commission on Religious Freedom (USCIRF) and conducted by the International Center for Religion and Diplomacy (ICRD) found that Pakistan’s public schools and madrassas negatively portray the country’s religious minorities and reinforce biases which fuel acts of discrimination, and possibly violence, against these communities.

“This study – the first-ever study of its kind -- documents how Pakistan’s public schools and privately-run madrassas are not teaching tolerance but are exacerbating religious differences,” said Leonard Leo, USCIRF chair. “Education reform incorporating religious tolerance is critical to the development of a society that values human rights, including religious freedom, for all its citizens. Teaching discrimination increases the likelihood that violent religious extremism in Pakistan will continue to grow, weakening religious freedom, national and regional stability, and global security.”
