 *** EVENT ADVISORY ***

Press Conference
Nine Days Before the Beijing Olympics: Human Rights and Religious Freedom Concerns Beyond the Games

Wednesday, July 30, 2008
10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
Room HC 7, Capitol Building (South Entrance, at Independence and New Jersey)

Please join the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom and the Congressional Human Rights Caucus at a press conference to highlight the severe violations of religious freedom and other human rights in the People’s Republic of China on the eve of the Beijing Olympics.

Hopes that the Olympic Games would dramatically improve human rights conditions in China have not been realized.  Instead, the situation has grown increasingly dire, particularly for many of China’s religious adherents, including Tibetan Buddhists, Protestants, Catholics, Uighur Muslims, and Falun Gong practitioners.

Members of Congress will join Commissioners at the press conference to discuss strategies and recommendations to address religious freedom and human rights concerns before, during, and after the Games.
