Although Bangladesh—now the world’s third largest Muslim-majority nation—is widely known for Christian persecution, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) recently removed the country from its Watch List, claiming that Bangladesh’s newly elected government is “more favorably disposed towards minority rights protection,” in contrast with the former government which failed to prosecute known acts of violence or injustice against religious minorities. Despite the perception that human rights conditions are improving, Christians continue to suffer from gross mistreatment and religious violence. Recent reports have included a Christian family who was beaten with sticks and machetes by an angry mob in December 2008 and a 20-year-old Bible student who was beaten for distributing Christian literature in February 2009. In many cases, Christians also suffer repercussions for reporting such abuse to the authorities.
