The day after Obama’s memorandum was announced, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, or USCIRF, said it had canceled a planned trip to Cuba by several of its members because the Cuban government had not issued visas in time.
Father Espino said it’s common for visas to visit Cuba to be issued the day before or the day an individual plans to travel.
Tom Carter, commission spokesman, said visas were not issued by the day the group planned to travel. “We had one commissioner in an airport ready to board a plane to Cuba,” he told CNS.
The commission is an independent organization created by Congress to monitor religious freedom around the world.
