Ma has been previously arrested and sentenced to prison for her practice of Falun Gong.
In October 2016, Ma was arrested in relation to her practice of Falun Gong. Police reportedly searched her home afterwards and confiscated Falun Gong-related materials.
In July 2017, the Luyuan District Court sentenced Ma to two years in prison. She was taken to Jilin Province Women’s Prison.
Ma was released following the completion of her sentence.
In October 2008, Ma was sentenced to eight years in prison. She was then released in December 2011 due to medical reasons. It is reported that Ma was mistreated while imprisoned during this time.
