Riahi, a member of the Sufi Gonabadi Order, had come to Tehran earlier in February to participate in a sit-in protesting the house arrest of spiritual leader Noor Ali Tabandeh. Nouri was reportedly charged with "assembling and colluding to act against national security" (Art. 610 IPC). Nouri was reportedly denied access to a lawyer.

In July 2018, Nouri was reportedly sentenced to five years in prison.

In August 2018, Nouri was released on bail.

In May 2019, Nouri was reportedly arrested again to begin serving her sentence.  It was also reported that the Appeals Court of Tehran reduced her sentence to one year in prison.

On November 1, 2019, Nouri was released.

Nouri was reportedly denied adequate medical care and subjected to attacks and inhumane living conditions during her detention.
