Zhu Tonggui is imprisoned for his religious belief and activity. 

On May 23, 2018, authorities arrested Zhu Tonggui and his brother from their rental property in Linyi City. It is reported that they remained detained for not renouncing Falun Gong. It is also reported that Zhu had been mistreated and tortured while detained. 

In March 2020, the Lanshan District Court reportedly sentenced Zhu to nine years in prison.
