Religious freedom conditions in Eritrea are abysmal as the government systematically persecutes individuals for their faith and permits registration of only four state-sanctioned religions. The government has imprisoned hundreds of Christians and dozens of Jehovah's Witnesses who have endured violence and torture in prisons, police stations, and improvised facilities, often under decrepit conditions and without health care. Conscientious objectors of faith face certain arrest.
