Using new and long-standing legislation to control the religious sphere, Kyrgyz authorities suppress independent religious activity. The government has enacted policies that particularly target Muslims who deviate from the state-sanctioned interpretation of Hanafi Sunni Islam, but that have also negatively impacted other groups such as Catholics, Protestants, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and International Society for Krishna Consciousness devotees.
