On March 5, 2021, authorities arrested Sayidov, an imam, after he refused to give the state-provided sermon at his mosque.

On June 4, 2021, Sayidov was sentenced to five years in prison.  While the charges against him were unclear, a judge reportedly accused him and two others of "act[ing] together and participat[ing] in an extremist religious organization."
