Kalsang Gyatso was imprisoned in relation to protesting religious freedom conditions.
On October 23, 2012, public security officials detained 6 Tibetans, including Gyatso, at the scene of a self-immolation in Xiahe (Sangchu) county, Gannan (Kanlho) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu province.
On January 31, 2013, the Xiahe County People’s Court reportedly sentenced Gyatso to 11 years in prison for “intentional homicide” (Art. 232 CCL).
Gyatso's sentence should have ended in October 2023.
