In May 2025, police authorities detained Tang Bingyi, pastor of the unregistered Light of Zion Church in Xi’an, in Beilin District, Shaanxi Province, along with nine others associated with the church. Authorities originally charged him with “using superstition to undermine implementation of the law" and later charged him with "fraud" for accepting church tithes.
