In late 2012, police arrested Zhang reportedly in relation to his religious leadership role for 30 churches and his organizing of church meetings. Police reportedly seized electronics containing religious content.
On January 29, 2015, the Datong District People’s Court of Huainan city sentenced Zhang to nine years in prison for "organizing or using a cult to undermine implementation of the law" (Art. 300 CCL).
Zhang served his sentence in Chaohu Prison, Anhui.
Zhang's sentence should have ended at the end of 2021.
