Prior to her disappearance, government authorities detained or imprisoned Mohammadi four times for her religious conversion and activity. In November 2017, authorities raided her house church, arrested her, and imprisoned her for 6 months in Evin Prison for "membership in evangelical groups" and "engaging in Christian activity." In July 2019, February 2020, and January 2021, authorities arrested and released her for not observing mandatory head covering laws. During her various detentions, authorities sexually abused Mohammadi, subjected her to solitary confinement, denied her food and medical care, and mocked her for her faith.
