On November 20, 2013, public security officials detained Tsekar in Biru (Driru) town, Biru county, Naqu (Nagchu) prefecture, Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR). Authorities had reportedly suspected that Tsekar and others were instigating protests against mining operations at Naglha Dzamba, a mountain regarded as religiously significant.
On December 19, 2013, the Biru County People’s Court reportedly sentenced Tsekar to nine years in imprisonment for activities intended to "split" Tibet from China.
