On February 6, 2018, public security officials from Weiyang district, Xi'an municipality, Shaanxi province, detained Ma for sharing information about Falun Gong with passersby.
On August 22, 2019, the Lianhu People's Court sentenced Ma to nine years in prison and a fine of 20,000 yuan.
In April 2020, it was learned that the Xi’an City Intermediate Court reportedly rejected Ma's appeal.
Ma is reportedly being held at Shaanxi Province Women’s Prison.
Ma has previously been arrested and tortured in relation to her Falun Gong activities.
