On January 30, 2023, authorities arrested Moradzahi, a prominent Sunni cleric, during protests in Zahedan against state violence towards ethnic and religious minorities. His arrest came amid a crackdown on protestors, civil society, and former political prisoners following nationwide protests against the death of Mahsa Amini and mandatory religious veiling. Authorities have accused Moradzahi of "maintaining numerous contacts with foreign individuals and media” and “distorting public perception."
Moradzahi has reportedly been subjected to torture and prolonged solitary confinement while detained.

In July 2024, Judge Mohammadreza Tavakkoli of Branch 1 of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court sentenced Nabavi to 10 years' imprisonment for “membership in groups intending to disrupt national security,” and “propaganda against Islamic law.” His sentence was later reduced to 5 years' imprisonment.
In May 2025, authorities summoned, arrested, and imprisoned Nabavi at Dastgerd Prison.
