In May 2017, authorities in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) detained Turdi amid mass detentions of ethnic minorities in XUAR. One of Turdi's relatives said that he believed some of his relatives were were detained either for growing beards or having religious materials at their homes or religious content on their phones.
On an unspecified date, Turdi was sentenced to 16 years in prison on unknown charges.
Authorities also detained Turdi's wife and sons in 2017 and sent them to a "political reeducation" center.
