Raveena

Extra Bio Info:

Raveena was subjected to forced renunciation of faith.

In March 2019, armed men reportedly kidnapped 15-year-old Raveena and her 14-year-old sister, Reena, from their home in Gotki district, Sindh province. In rapid succession, the sisters were converted to Islam, renamed, and then married to the men accused of abducting them. The seminary that facilitated Raveena's conversion and marriage recorded her as 19 years old and as having converted to Islam of her own free will, contrary to her family's claim that she was underage and acted under coercion. Lawyers affiliated with the seminary filed a court petition to formally "protect" Raveena from her Hindu family.

In April 2019, the Islamabad High Court ruled that Raveena's conversion was not forced and permitted her to remain with her husband, despite her family's allegations that she was a minor and had been coerced.

Simran Kumari

Extra Bio Info:

Simran Kumari was subjected to forced renunciation of faith.

In August 2020, 17-year-old Kumari disappeared from her aunt's home in Gotki district, Sindh province. Days later, her family was informed that she was being held at a seminary for religious converts. When Kumari's family visited her at the seminary, they were prohibited from seeing her privately. Kumari was visibly distressed and was being coached by a woman there to tell her family she was converting to Islam of her own free will. Two hours later, the family was informed that she had converted to Islam, married a Muslim man, and changed her name to Ayesha.

The day after her conversion, a judge issued a court order "protecting" Simran from her Hindu family. Police refused to investigate her case. In January 2021, an additional sessions judge issued a court order further prohibiting Kumari's family from accessing her.

In April 2021, it was reported that Kumari was pregnant.
