On November 4, 2021, authorities in Taizhou City, Zhejiang Province detained Wang because of his religious activities with the Church of Almighty God, including possessing and disseminating religious materials and gathering together with other members. Police briefly detained Wang in October 2021 following arrests of Church of Almighty God members, but placed him under "residential surveillance at a designated location" before formally arresting him a month later. Wang alleged that police kept him awake for several days in order to extract a confession while under residential surveillance.
On August 30, 2023, the Jiaojiang District Court of Taizhou City sentenced Wang to nine years in prison for "organizing or using a cult to undermine implementation of the law" (Art. 300 CCL). The court also fined him 20,000 yuan.
