On October 27, 2014, authorities detained Yan in Yaohai District, Hefei City, Anhui Province, reportedly in relation to his religious beliefs and transporting religious materials to other church members. Police reportedly confiscated cash, religious materials, and discs containing religious materials. Yan was reportedly tortured weeks after his arrest while in state custody.
On June 13, 2016, the Qiaocheng District People’s Court in Bozhou city sentenced Yan to eight years in prison for "organizing or using a cult to undermine implementation of the law" (Art. 300 CCL).
On August 11, 2016, the Qiaocheng District Intermediate People’s Court rejected Yan's appeal.
