Police briefly detained Wang in October 2021 following arrests of Church of Almighty God members, but placed him under "residential surveillance at a designated location" before formally arresting him a month later. Wang alleged that police kept him awake for several days in order to extract a confession while under residential surveillance.
On August 30, 2023, the Jiaojiang District Court of Taizhou City sentenced Wang to nine years in prison for "organizing or using a cult to undermine implementation of the law" (Art. 300 CCL). The court also fined him 20,000 yuan.
