In January 2023, authorities from the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Khatlon region arrested Abdulhannon Usmonov for disrupting music and dancing at his nephew's wedding ceremony, behavior that Usmonov considered haram (forbidden) in Islam. During the investigation, authorities accused him of watching and distributing banned Salafi materials online, leading prayers in the Salafi style, and obstructing his daughter's education.

In April 2023, a Khatlon region court sentenced Usmonov to 6 years' imprisonment for "participating in the activity of religious organizations banned by a court for extremist activity" (Art. 307-3-2 TCC) and "impeding a principal compulsory common education" (Art. 164 TCC).
