On March 15, 2008, public security officials in Sangye (Samye) township, Zhanang (Dranang) county, Shannan (Lhokha) prefecture, Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR), arrested Buchung, who is a monk, and several others for participating in protests calling for the Dalai Lama’s return to Tibet and respect for human rights, including religious freedom.
In May/June 2008, the Shannan Intermediate People’s Court sentenced Buchung to 15 years in prison on unspecified charges.
Buchung's sentence should have ended in March 2023.
