Azizjon Bannopov was imprisoned in relation to his religious belief and activity.
In 2001, the Margilon City Court sentenced Bannopov to nine years in prison for “attempts to overthrow the constitutional order” (Art. 159 UCC) and an unspecified subsection of Article 244 UCC.
In 2008, Bannopov was sentenced to an additional seven years on reportedly fabricated charges, and in 2017, he was sentenced to another five years.
In September 2022, it was reported that Bannopov had been released.
