Dai Zhichao was detained for his religious activity and leadership role.

In December 2018, authorities in Chengdu municipality, Sichuan province, detained 100 members of the unregistered house church Early Rain Covenant Church, including Dai. Authorities accused him of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble." On an unspecified date, Dai was reportedly released.

In February 2026, police authorities rearrested Dai, a preacher at Early Rain Covenant Church in Chengdu. Authorities charged him with “inciting subversion of state power” (Article 105(2), PRC Criminal Law) and confined him in Deyang Detention Center.
