Helil Hashim is imprisoned for his ethnoreligious identity.
In 2018, authorities in Ghulja (Yining) city, Ili (Yili) Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), detained Hashim, a businessman, reportedly in relation to his previous travel to Egypt and to his sending his son to attend extracurricular religious classes when he was in primary school in the mid-to-late 2000s. Hashim's detention came amid mass detentions of largely Muslim ethnic minorities in XUAR in 2017 and 2018.
Later in 2018, Hashim was sentenced to 19 years in prison reportedly in relation to "endangering state security."
Hashim's wife and son were also detained.
