In May 2017, a court in Hotan (Hetian) prefecture, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) sentenced Damollam to 18 years in prison on unspecified charges. Damollam's sentence came amid mass detentions of largely Muslim ethnic minorities in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) in 2017.
