Li Gang was imprisoned for his religious belief and activity.
On August 19, 2017, officers from the Changji City Public Security Bureau detained Li reportedly for attending a religious meeting.
On June 11, 2018, the Qitai Reclamation Area People’s Court in Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps sentenced Li to five years and six months in prison and fined him 5,000 yuan for "organizing or using a cult to undermine implementation of the law" (Art. 300 CCL).
Li's sentence should have ended in February 2023.
