Mesud Abley is detained for his ethnoreligious identity.

In December 2017, authorities in Urumqi municipality, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) detained Abley and his wife, Ayshemqiz Hajim, and sent them to Atush (Atushi) city, Kizilsu (Kezilesu) Kyrgyz Autonomous Prefecture, XUAR, their registered place of residence. Abley's detention came amid mass detentions of largely Muslim ethnic minorities in XUAR.

Abley's son had also been detained around the same time in Beijing.
