Remzi Kurtnezirov is under house arrest for his religious belief and association.
In March 2024, authorities in Russian-occupied Crimea raided the homes of several Crimean Tatar Muslims, including Kurtnezirov, and arrested him. Authorities accused him of being a member of Hizb ut-Tahrir, a religious organization banned in Russia but not in Ukraine. After his arrest, authorities placed him under house arrest due to his health issues including diabetes, hypertension, and paralysis on the right side of his body.
In May 2026, authorities sentenced Kurtnezirov to 20 years' imprisonment on charges of terrorism (Art. 205.5-1 RCC) and delayed his imprisonment pending appeal.
