Seydehmet Awut was imprisoned for his ethnoreligious identity and for teaching religion.
On April 14, 2008, Ghulja county police detained 12 Uyghur men, including Awut, reportedly for teaching religion to children.
On March 24, 2009, the Ili Intermediate People's Court sentenced Awut to ten years in prison for “splitting the state” (Art. 103 CCL).
Awut's sentence should have ended in April 2018.
