Shamsiddin Giyasov was imprisoned for his religious activity.
On January 4, 2002, the Tashkent City Court sentenced Giyasov to six years and six months in prison for “attempts to overthrow the constitutional order” (Art. 159 UCC) and an unspecified subsection of Article 244 UCC. Giyasov’s family reports that he was targeted for no other reason than the peaceful exercise of his religious beliefs.
On September 12, 2007, the Navoi Region Court sentenced Giyasov to another six years and six months in prison for “attempts to overthrow the constitutional order” (Art. 159 UCC).
On August 15, 2008, the Navoi Region Court sentenced Giyasov to 17 years in prison for “organizing a criminal group” (Art. 242 UCC), “attempts to overthrow the constitutional order” (Art. 159 UCC), and an unspecified subsection of Article 244 UCC.
In September 2022, it was reported that Giyasov had been released.
