In 2002, Ministry of State Security officials detained NP-0097 after she was refouled from China, where she had interacted with Christians and engaged in religious practice. Authorities confined her at Onsong County MSS Detention Center, where detainees are subjected to degrading treatment, prolonged stress positions, deprivation of food and water, and inhumane sanitation conditions. During interrogation, NP-0097 confessed to praying in her cell. Following her confession, fellow detainees beat her, likely at the direction of prison guards.
