Victim NP-0098 is detained for her religious activity. 

In 2002, Ministry of State Security officials detained NP-0098 after she was refouled from China, where she had interacted with Christians and attended a Christian church. Authorities confined and interrogated her at Onsong County MSS Detention Center, where detainees are subjected to degrading treatment, prolonged stress positions, deprivation of food and water, and inhumane sanitation conditions. 

During interrogation, guards repeatedly kicked and struck NP-0098 with a wooden club, causing severe bleeding, after another detainee told them she had prayed in Yanbian.
