Ziyawudun Choruq is detained for his religious activity and ethnoreligious identity.
On an unknown date in 2017, authorities in Korla (Ku’erle) city, Bayangol (Bayinguoleng) Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), detained Choruq, the elderly former Communist Party secretary of Qarayulghun village, Qarayulghun township, Korla, and sent him to a "political reeducation" center. After retiring from the party, Choruq became more involved in his mosque, prayed regularly, and even went on the Hajj pilgrimage in 2015 without official approval. Choruq was reportedly accused of spreading separatism and extremism. Choruq's detention came amid mass detentions of largely Muslim ethnic minorities in XUAR in 2017.
