On October 9, 2021, authorities arrested Zhang in relation to her Falun Gong activities. She was brought to the Changing PSB Detention Center in Shanghai.

On June 12, 2023, a court sentenced Zhang to five years in prison. 

Zhang was previously arrested in 2009 for her practice of Falun Gong and served one year and six months in prison.
