In November 2013, public security officials detained Choekyab in Biru (Driru) town, Biru county, Naqu (Nagchu) prefecture, Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR). Authorities had reportedly suspected that Choekyab and others were instigating protests against mining operations at Naglha Dzamba, a mountain regarded as religiously significant.
On December 19, 2013, the Biru County People’s Court reportedly sentenced Choekyab to 13 years in imprisonment for activities intended to "split" Tibet from China.

Authorities searched their phones and found images of recent demolitions of Buddha statues at Draggo Monastery in Draggo county.
