Asang is detained in relation to his documenting of religious freedom violations.
On January 10, 2022, police in Draggo (Luhuo) county, Kardze (Ganzi) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (TAP), Sichuan province, detained three pilgrims, including Asang, on their way home from the Buddhist monastic complex at Larung Gar in Sertar (Seda) county, Kardze TAP, to Dragyab (Chaya) county, Chamdo municipality, Tibet Autonomous Region. Authorities searched their phones and found images of recent demolitions of Buddha statues at Draggo Monastery in Draggo county.
