Mutellip Sidiq Qahiri is imprisoned for his ethnoreligious identity and religious scholarship.
In or around November 2018, authorities in Kashgar prefecture, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), detained Qahiri, a retired professor, reportedly in relation to the "ethnocultural subject matter of his research and publications" which focused on Uyghur names. Qahiri had previously done research on Arabic names in Egypt, and in 2010, he released an encyclopedia of Uyghur names.
In March 2019, Qahiri was reportedly released from an internment camp.
In early 2020, the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court reportedly sentenced Qahiri to two years and six months in prison. The sentence was reportedly suspended for four years. The court ordered that Qahiri remain under house arrest until it goes into effect.
Qahiri reportedly requires daily medication for unspecified reasons.
Qahiri reportedly has five children.
